A round look at spiritual warfare
Rating (4)
Date: 2010-02-10

Dr. Murphy displays a rich depth of spiritual warfare information. IF one takes the time to look to the Scripture references and notates questions and ideas while reading; Ephesians will come into dramatic light as the book of Spiritual warfare in the Bible. Dr. Murphy shows a variety of useful information that can show the seriousness of the world in which we live - a battleground. Murphy looks at a wide range of practical examples within the Old and New Testament as proof to clear ideas.

This massive 626-page book reflects an evangelical perspective and has many useful insights. Unfortunately, in addition to being incredibly verbose, it suffers from more serious flaws. He is frequently careless in his use of scripture. The verses he cites after making a point often do not teach what he says.

He mixes speculation and scripture too much, and doesn't delineate between them. For instance, he admits that, "nowhere do the Epistles directly discuss any teaching on the possibility of the demonization of Christians or their deliverance," and "They do not contain close-up descriptions of evil spirits being cast out." Yet his struggle to see "power encounters" in the epistles goes on for many pages of tortured interpretation and implication, trying to see them there anyway.

In general, Murphy's coverage of spiritual warfare suffers from exaggeration. He feels certain that Christians can be demonized by listening to rock, heavy metal, or punk music. He thinks, "millions of children do pick up demons, especially if SRA [Satanic Ritual Abuse] was the context of their abuse." p. 452 Indeed his entire section on child abuse and ritual abuse is credulous, departs completely from biblical authority, and serves to discredit the book to some extent. Christians should move away from this discredited belief.

This book offers instructions on how to deliver and sustain yourself and your loved ones from the bondage of the evil one.

To finish this long book is a spiritual struggle in itself, but well worth the outcome; don't overlook the appendices:

Appendix A - The Daily Affirmation of Faith (unleash the incomprehensible power of God in your life)

Appendix B - Warfare Prayer (Stand against Satan and command him out of your life in the name of Jesus Christ)

Appendix C - Group Deliverance Prayer (As a group exorcise the worker of iniquity)

Appendix D - Requirements for Deliverance and Staying Free (Freedom from the clutches of the father of lies)

Appendix E - How I Learned to Pray for the Lost (Effective intercession for the lost)
